Geology at the Edge is an initiative of Shorefast: a registered Canadian charity dedicated to building economic and cultural resilience on Fogo Island, Newfoundland. Using the approach of asset-based community development, Shorefast has established a holistic set of innovative, place-based social businesses and charitable initiatives. GatE is one such charitable initiative.

Geology at the Edge is led by geologist Paul Dean, and is the world's first community-based geologist-in-residence program. Since 2013, GatE has brought several geologists per year to Fogo Island, giving these researchers the opportunity to study the Island's geological history, and creating the opportunity for local people and visitors alike to learn from these scientists. Besides performing their own research, geologists-in-residence lead geology walks, and make public presentations in the Fogo Island Inn cinema that are always well-attended by guests and community members alike. Geologists stick around for periods ranging from a few weeks to a few months, but many form lasting connections to the Island and return again and again.
